A Quick Overview
Before you sell, you’ll need to configure your product’s selling parameters in Kartra. This is where you establish your price, payment options and define what communications occur once a product has been successfully purchased. Let’s look at the key requirements and considerations needed when creating a product.
First and most important is your Merchant Gateway, or the way that customers will pay you! We integrate with PayPal, Stripe, Authorize.net, and Braintree for payment processing. Once you have set this, select how frequent you want payments to be made.
You can have a one-time payment, a limited installment of payments, or a recurring payment system. You can even combine a recurring payment with a series of installments, having (for example) customers pay 3 monthly installments every year! Subscription billing plan can be used in conjunction with our membership site feature, so turning on and off access to customers is completely automated!
However, if you simply have a singular product to sell, you can do so using non-subscription billing. And once your leads become customers, receipts are generated through Kartra in addition to the receipts the payment gateway may or may not send.
Additionally, you can use the automations in the product setup to tag your customer, send them a single communication, or subscribe them to an automatic follow-up email or sequence for those who have just purchased your products.
Creating a Product with a Single Payment
Let’s walk through the steps for how to create a basic product in Kartra.
First, click My Products in the menu on the left (marked #1 in the image below) and you will be taken to your main Products page (marked #2). Here, you can add a new product by clicking the green +PRODUCT button that hovers on the right side of the screen (marked #3).
Then you’ll enter the internal and external names for your product, a description (which your customers will see), and whether or not to list it in the Kartra Marketplace:
Make sure to hit the green “Confirm” button at the top right of the window!
Then you’ll choose whether this product will be a Main product or a Upsell/Downsell. If it’s an upsell or a downsell, you’ll select the main product that it is associated with.
The next step is to select the type of payment your customers will make for this product. There are four options, One-time, Recurring, Limited installments and Recurring installments. In our example here, we’re going to use a one-time payment.
NOTE: If you want to create a subscription-based product that is paid monthly, you would use the Recurring Payment option. The Recurrent Installments are for payments that repeat each year or two, but are paid in installments rather than a lump sum for the year.
On this same screen, you can also toggle on and off initial payments (which is a temporary pricing structure, for example a discount for the first three months) and Default price, which controls whether or not this price point is the default price for this product. It has to be the default price until you have added more than one price for this product, and so for our example, we will leave Default price toggled “on” and Enable initial payment toggled “off”.
Just below that, you can set up or disable a money-back guarantee period. The default is a 30-day money back guarantee.
On the next page, you’ll enter the URL for the Thank You Page you would like to use for this product. You can build one right here in Kartra! And if you have read about, or watched our video about, The Kartra Difference – you probably already have a Thank-You Page built 🙂
Next, you’ll set up your checkout page. As you can see in the image below, there are plenty of options here to get you going, including custom designs. Just hit the Change button to the right of any settings you would like to change from the default.
The next page gives you the option to activate an affiliate program for this product. You have options here to add multiple commission tiers, payment milestones (which control when payouts go to your affiliates), and the look and feel of your affiliate sign-up page. You can use our default affiliate sign-up page, or make a popup if you already have an affiliate page built.
If you do set up an affiliate program for this product, you can get the affiliate link to distribute by going back to your main Products page, selecting the product you just created, and clicking the AFFILIATES button, as seen in the image below.
From now on, you’ll be able to see your new product on the My Products page, and track all of your sales analytics for it. Your products can all be connected and integrated through Automations and Communications sequences, so that you can maximize your follow-up and customer retention strategies!
But wait, you’re not done yet – make sure you set up your Payment Gateway so that you can receive the money for your product!
